1. Chris Algieri, 30, is unbeaten in 20 fights.

2. Algieri holds the WBO light-welterweight world title, and has a 5 inch height and reach advantage over Manny Pacquiao. That advantage will be vitally important to his chances in this contest.

3. Algieri came off the canvas twice in the first round against Ruslan Provodnikov to defeat the very tough Eastern European on a split points decision in June, and claim the WBO light-welterweight crown. That shows his heart. But he showed in that fight he has a great jab, and great movement.

4. The next step in Chris Algieri’s career will be medical school. “I had always planned to go to a New York institution because I love New York and had a great experience in college back on Long Island."

5. Algieri graduated with an MA from Stony Brook. “They have a fantastic, competitive medical school and that would be a great place to look into. I’m interested in Cardiovascular Medicine,” says the boxer.

6. This is the first camp in which Algieri has been a full-time boxer. Remarkable. If he wins, Algieri may have to face Pacquiao again, because there is a rematch clause.

7. Algieri is a Long Islander, but he carries the Argentine torch. “It’s great to see part of my culture doing so well in the sport that I’m involved in, a sport that I have a passion for. I grew up hearing about a lot of Argentine fighters, the great Carlos Monzon and now guys like Marcos Maidana and Sergio Martinez," says Algieri.

8. Algieri is a big consumer of mate, the Argentine yerba plant. It’s packed full of vitamins and nutrients and a lot of B vitamins that you would normally get from meat.

9. After he graduated with his master's degree, he was working as a nutritionist and a personal trainer. He has been a personal trainer to the UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman, and his stablemate Al Iaquinta, a rising lightweight star in the UFC.

10. Bob Arum, Pacquiao's promoter, has called Algieri "a modern-day Gene Tunney" at welterweight and light welterweight on account of his skill set and superb defence.

He's going to need all of that against Pacquiao.

BLH Preview: Manny Pacquiao vs Chris Algieri, Jessie Vargas vs Antonio DeMarco, Vasyl Lomachenko vs Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo, Zou Shiming vs Kwanpichit OnesongchaiGym. Here's the big card for the weekend, obviously, with Manny Pacquiao returning to defend his WBO welterweight title against Chris Algieri, who until recently was the WBO junior welterweight champ, but that's a whole other stupid story. Anyway, this is being fought at a 144-pound catchweight, and if Pacquiao looks good at the weight and wins, it's believed he will move back down to 140 pounds. The undercard is ... uh. It's what will be on before the main event.
